10 January 2018 – Southampton, UK – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library on the subject of Major Projects & Programs. The new resource is titled “Actual Impact of the Atatürk Dam” and is a 2002 report about the impacts of the Atatürk Dam in Turkey which is the third largest dam in Turkey.
This 2002 research report is by Cecilia Tortajada published by Third World Centre for Water Management. The primary objective of this paper was to analyse the extent and magnitude of the actual social, economic and environmental impacts of the Atatürk Dam in the Southeast Anatolia, Turkey on the region some eight years after its construction was completed. The direct impacts, both positive and negative, due to the construction of the Atatürk Dam on the people living in the two provinces affected directly, Adiyaman and Sanliurfa, as well as on the region as a whole, were reviewed.
Atatürk Dam is located at south-eastern part of Turkey and was planned and implemented by the State Hydraulic Works (DSI). The Construction began in 1983 and completed in 1992. The dam embankment is 169 m high (554 ft) and 1,820 m long (5,970 ft). The hydroelectric power plant (HEPP) has a total installed power capacity of 2,400 MW and generates 8,900 GW-h electricity annually. The total cost of the dam project was about US$1,250,000,000.
