31 March 2020 – Kisumu, Kenya – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library (PMWL) related to solving global human and social problems. The new resource is titled “Conflict analysis of Kenya”, and is a research report by Brigitte Rohwerder prepared for the European Commission’s Instrument Contributing to Stability and Peace © European Union 2015.

Kenya is a multi-ethnic country with over 40 different ethnicities. It is the 7th most violent country in the ACLED (Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project) dataset. According to the findings, Kenya’s intercommunal violence is much higher than elsewhere in Africa. The country has high levels of sexual violence and gender-based violence; intercommunal violence; low levels of persistent violence; cycles of election-related violence; and an increasing number of terrorist attacks. The incidence, gravity and intensity of violence have all increased in recent years.

Ethnicity in Kenya shapes people’s perceptions of fear and power. The root of some of the violence in the country lies in the struggles to influence the balance of power and distribution of economic resources. One key weakness of the state is inequitable policies but endemic corruption has also severely compromised the state of security in the country. Terrorist attacks have increased since Kenya’s military involvement in Somalia. The young are susceptible to radicalization as the high poverty and unemployment rates remain factors that frustrate the youth. Al-shabab are actively recruiting from all over the country including non-Somali’s and non-Muslims. This has instilled fear and panic among Kenyans. Addressing the root causes of conflicts should therefore be at the center of the government’s efforts if they want to avoid conflicts in future.
