9 February 2018 – Mumbai, India – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library on the subject of project management in rail transport industries. The new resource is titled “Innovation Project Management and Coordination Speed Up Afghanistan Railway Project'', published on the website of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The Hairatan and Mazar‑e‑Sharif railway project was a much-needed project in Afghanistan to raise Afghanistan’s profile as a transit route to make transport of goods more reliable, efficient and affordable. For Afghanistan, the railway is the new link to the new markets and opportunities. It connects to Uzbekistan's rail network, which leads to bustling markets in Europe and Asia through the “New Silk Road.” With the help of this project, freight transported in the region has increased from 4500 tons to 6000 tons per day; the freight travel time also dropped from 2 hours by road to 1 hour by rail; impact on the environment due to heavy vehicles was also reduced i.e. carbon dioxide emission dropped from 2.3 million tons to 1.7 million tons; It also led to creation of new jobs and local business.

On 30th September 2009, the Asian Development Bank approved $165 million to build a 75-kilometer railway project connecting Hairatan and Mazar‑e‑Sharif. After that, the project was awarded to the party that finished the project just in 10 months, as against the 12-month schedule. The main reason for this achievement is the project management and the coordination between the parties involved in this project. They followed different approaches like Starting from Scratch, Defining Urgency, Turnkey Model, Rewards and Penalties, and Security & Funds.
