24 January 2019 – Mumbai, India – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library (PMWL) related to agile project management. The new resource is titled “Managing an Agile program? Consider an AMO”, an article from Deloitte Insights written by Sam Martin and Kareem Abdelsadek.

A Program Management Office (PMO) is designed to drive consistency and introduce economies of repetition across all projects and programs regardless of the organization’s size, industry and maturity. This enables the project committee to make better decisions and also provides a roadmap that helps in the future project success.

Often in the traditonal Waterfall model these PMO’s are blindsided by certain problems that arise very late in the project resulting in a failure or delay in the delivery of the product. Hence in an Agile methodology where the project is characterized by constant iteration and collaboration, for these PMO’s to survive and maintain visibility into the project delivery is a critical question.

Authors says that “an Agile Management Office (AMO) represents a way to transform the traditional PMO to better support programs executing (or experimenting with) Agile”. This article discusses the risks and pitfalls of a traditional PMO and the mismatch between traditional PMO techniques and an Agile project manifests. It introduces the concept of AMO which performs an oversight function similar to a PMO but operates in a different way. Further the article highlights the key features that makes an AMO unique and sheds light on whether an AMO is for our organization or not.
