Access to new resource related to smart city programs and projects added to PMWL

03 March 2019 – Almaty, Kazakhstan – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library (PMWL) related to “Smart cities“.The new resource is titled: Smart Astana, by the “Astana Innovations“ JSC and officially initiated by the government of Kazakhstan in 2013.

“Smart Astana“ is a concept of sustainable development for the capital or Kazakhstan, which is being implemented on the initiative of the First President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. Nazarbayev assumed the task of joining Astana among the 50 intellectual and modern cities of the world.

At the same time, in accordance with the Plan of the Nation “100 concrete steps to implement five institutional reforms”, the President set the task of turning Astana into a business, cultural and scientific centre of Eurasia, attracting researchers, students, entrepreneurs, tourists from all over the region. In this regard, the strategic objectives of “Astana Innovations“ are to develop Astana’s competitiveness by creating favorable conditions for the development and implementation of innovations in the capital.

“Astana Innovations“ JSC acts as an integrator of the innovation ecosystem, consolidating the efforts of the city authorities, the scientific and business community. The key activities are the implementation of the “Smart Astana” concept and the “Safe City” program.

The Smart Astana project is based on the development model of European smart cities based on the interaction of 6 characteristics: Smart Economy, Smart Management, Smart Life, Smart Mobility, Smart People and Smart Environment. As world practice shows, “Smart Cities” are an effective regulator in terms of energy savings, maintenance costs of utility networks and reduction of road accidents.

The goal of the program is to improve the quality of life and well-being of the population, improve and modernize the infrastructure of Astana and the level of public safety. Smart Astana facilitates the interaction of citizens with the administration, also provides an environment conducive to personal and business development.

Astana Innovations JSC has implemented 4 pilot projects of the “Smart City”: “Smart Polyclinic”, “Smart School”, “Smart Street Lighting” and “Smart payments”. Financing of these project is carried out exclusively at the expense of investment funds.
