Project portfolio management is one of three general topics now widely included in the project management field, along with program (programme) management and project management. Project portfolio management has been much researched in recent years, and much has been published on the topic. This section of the PM World Library provides access to a few useful resources on these topics.
Definitions
Portfolio: A collection of projects or programs and other work that are grouped together to facilitate effective management of that work to meet strategic business objectives. The projects or programs of the portfolio may not necessarily be interdependent or directly related. (PMI: The Standard for Portfolio Management, 2nd Edition. 2008) A grouping of an organisation’s projects, programmes. Portfolios can be managed at an organisational or functional level. Portfolio Management: The centralized management of one or more portfolios, which includes identifying, prioritizing, authorizing, managing and controlling projects, programs and other related work, to achieve strategic business objectives. (PMI: The Standard for Portfolio Management, 2nd Edition. 2008); The selection, prioritisation and control of an organisation’s projects and programmes in line with its strategic objectives and capacity to deliver.
