15 March 2016 – Milan, Italy – A new resource has been added to the PM World Library related to contracting and procurement, and more specifically the potentially innovative and sustainable procurement by social enterprise sector. The new resource is titled “Social Procurement in UK Construction Projects.”
Social procurement differs from traditional procurement in the use of procurement to leverage extra social benefits and create ‘social value’ in local communities. A social enterprise perspective is taken because it represents one of the main mechanisms by which firms can achieve their social procurement objectives. There are a number of ways in which organizations can engage with social enterprises through project social procurement strategies, includes: indirect subcontracting through social clauses, purchasing agreements, JVs and MOUs.
However, there are as yet no insights into industries like construction and it is not known if there are sector-specific challenges which may exist. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with the leaders of twelve social enterprises operating in the construction industries based in the UK. The results indicate that numerous changes to existing procurement practices are needed to encourage the engagement of more social enterprise in construction projects.
