Organizations

Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) – Since its founding in 1951, AWI has sought to alleviate the suffering inflicted on animals by people. In the organization's early years, their emphasis was on the needs of animals used for experimentation. In the decades that followed, they expanded the scope of our work to address many other areas of animal suffering, including cruel animal factories and endangered species. Based in Washington, DC, USA, AWI’s mission is to alleviate suffering of nonhuman animals. Learn more at https://awionline.org/

Friends of Animals - Friends of Animals (FoA) is a non-profit, international animal advocacy organization, incorporated in the state of New York since 1957. Friends of Animals advocates for the rights of nonhuman animals, free-living and domestic. Our goal is to free animals from cruelty and institutionalized exploitation around the world. Learn more here.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) - The largest animal rights organization in the world, with more than 6.5 million members and supporters. PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: in the food industry, in the clothing trade, in laboratories, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of rodents, birds, and other animals who are often considered “pests” as well as cruelty to domesticated animals. PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns. Learn more here.

Animal Rights 101 – Just like there are rules and laws for humans that make the world a safer and more organized place, there are laws created to protect animals and regulate the way they are treated. Animal law addresses issues such as mistreatment of animals, laboratory research on animals, and conservation of endangered species. Most of the laws in the United States are carried out on the state level, but additional laws are carried out by the federal government. This informative blog post by the Parker Waichman law firm briefly discusses animal rights laws in the USA and provides links to other related information.
