Dr Karen Thompson, FSI FAPM FHEA is co-founder of Responsible Project Management and an independent education consultant. She is a member of the British Standards Institute Committee for Project Controls, APM Sustainability Interest Network, PMI Curriculum Review Committee, adjunct faculty member at the University of Southampton, member of the UN PRME Working Group on Sustainability Mindset, Fellow of The Schumacher Institute and member of the Project Skills Alliance. Karen worked on projects in the field of information systems and technology for 17 years before moving into academia where she worked for more than 25 years with education, research, and management responsibilities.
The focus of her work is education at the intersection of sustainability and project management. In 2017 she won the APM’s Herbert Walton Award for her research on the use of social media in the practice of project management, followed in 2019 by the PMI UK’s Award for Teaching Excellence. Also in 2019, work on developing Responsible Project Management with Nigel Williams and Shirley Thompson won the PMI UK’s Award for Innovation in Project Management and PMI UK’s Award for Social Good (Community Advancement). She continues to advocate for Sustainability Mindset and the use of Systems Thinking to inform education and for managing projects to deliver beneficial outcomes for people, planet, and prosperity.
