12 September 2025 – Stralsund, Germany – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library (PMWL) related to Change Management and Project Management. The new resource is titled “Bridging Change and Project Management: A Review and Future Research Directions”, by Elina Jääskä, Kirsi Aaltonen, Liina Hellens, and Jaakko Kujala and published in Project Leadership and Society in December 2024.
This paper addresses the question: How is change management discussed within project studies? The paper points out that projects are fundamentally about implementing change but theoretical and practical approaches to managing organizational transformation remain fragmented. The review highlights the importance of connecting organizational change management with project management by exploring themes such as change processes, resistance, success factors, and the interface between temporary and permanent organizations. Concepts include organizational change, change projects, and the dynamics of integration between change and project management disciplines.
The study applies a systematic literature review, drawing on 43 articles published across leading project management journals from 1983–2023. The authors categorize research into six thematic clusters: disciplinary relationships, change processes, change as a success factor, resistance, organizational interfaces, and change in project-based industries. Bibliographic analysis with inductive coding constructs a conceptual framework that highlights knowledge gaps and future research directions.
