Access to new resource related to Fresh Waterways Restoration & Cleanup added to PMWL

3 January 2019 – Mumbai, India – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library (PMWL) related to rejuvenation of the river Ganga in India. The new resource is titled “Ganga River Basin Environment Management Plan: Interim Report”, by consortium of 7 IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) in collaboration with multiple government bodies was published on website of Ministry of water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation (India) in 2013.
The Ganga river in India is one of the longest rivers with religious values attached to it. Water of the river has been contaminated in recent decades due to release of industrial waste and sewage. The report underscores the need to clean the contaminated river water and river basin which is harming its ecosystem. It describes key features of Ganga basin which includes its hydrology, geology, wetlands, geomorphology and biodiversity.
The report further elaborates the conceptual framework which can be used by policymakers to design a public policy. The consortium has given multiple recommendations in the action plan which are particularly useful for policy designing. They include prohibition of certain activities, restrictions on certain chemicals, promotion of environmentally beneficial activities, etc.
