19 April 2026 – Mumbai, India – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library (PMWL) related to benchmarking and project management performance improvement. The new resource is titled “Benchmarking: An Effective Tool in Improving Project Management Performance,” an open-access article by Assem Hatem Taha and Amin M. F. Seder, published in the Journal of Advanced Science and Engineering Research in 2014.
The article presents a comprehensive review of benchmarking as a strategic tool for improving project management performance. It explains how organizations use benchmarking to compare their project management practices with industry leaders in order to identify performance gaps and adopt best practices. The study highlights benchmarking as a continuous and structured evaluation process that supports decision-making and enhances organizational competitiveness.
The research categorizes benchmarking into different types based on what is compared (performance, process, and strategic benchmarking) and whom it is compared against (internal and external benchmarking). As discussed in the literature review section on page 2, these approaches enable organizations to analyze their strategies, operations, and processes against best-in-class performers and implement improvements accordingly.
A key contribution of the paper is its synthesis of various benchmarking models used to improve project management performance. The table on page 6 summarizes multiple frameworks, including KPI-based models, balanced scorecard approaches, maturity models, Delphi methods, and analytic hierarchy processes. Each model is evaluated based on its strengths and limitations, providing practical insights for organizations selecting appropriate benchmarking techniques.
The study also outlines the benefits of benchmarking, such as improved decision-making, innovation, and resource optimization, while acknowledging limitations including time consumption, cost, and challenges in identifying comparable metrics. The paper concludes that benchmarking remains a powerful tool for continuous improvement and performance enhancement in project management.
