The changing role of data and information in big projects and the utilization of big data
28 February 2016 – Milan, Italy – A new resource has been added to the PM World Library related to managing major projects. The new resource is titled “Managing change in the delivery of complex projects: Configuration management, asset information and ‘big data’”.
Digital technologies have been transforming project delivery in all the industries. Large datasets have become a key tool for flexible and timely decision-making processes in less predictable and more volatile situations. The paper focuses the attention on large and complex projects, such as the construction of an aircraft or a train, where the integrity of information and data is essential for the success of the project. In those industries, the configuration management is used to manage changes in the delivery of projects.
The configuration management is characterized by different phases: the identification of the product structure and the configuration of items; the understanding of how the system is structured at any stage of the lifecycle; the evaluation of available data and the audit to verify the consistency of the information.
