17 May 2026 – Mumbai, India – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library (PMWL) related to product lifecycle management (PLM), innovation strategy, and new product development (NPD). The new resource is titled “A Systematic Methodology for Setting a Product Lifecycle Management Strategy to Enhance Innovation Potential,” published in Applied Sciences in 2025.
The article presents a comprehensive methodology for helping organizations establish effective Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) strategies to improve innovation potential and optimize New Product Development (NPD) processes. The research focuses on aligning PLM implementation with organizational goals, innovation capabilities, and product development efficiency.
The study introduces a PLM Functional Model and a Normative-Contingent NPD Evaluation Model designed to systematically prioritize PLM implementation efforts based on organizational needs and innovation objectives. The framework integrates reference PLM functional models, mechanisms for mapping organizational needs, and quantitative methodologies for assessing the impact of PLM functional aspects on NPD capabilities.
The research identifies critical success factors influencing New Product Development, including product innovation, process formalization, cross-functional collaboration, supply chain integration, customer involvement, and portfolio management. The article emphasizes that structured yet flexible PLM processes can significantly improve product development effectiveness, innovation performance, and strategic alignment.
The paper also proposes a systematic methodology for evaluating NPD processes through best-practice frameworks and fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approaches. According to the NPD evaluation model presented in Figure 3, organizations can assess and prioritize areas for process enhancement while improving innovation sustainability and operational efficiency.
The authors conclude that integrating PLM strategies with innovation-focused NPD practices enables organizations to improve product commercialization, operational effectiveness, and long-term competitiveness across different industrial contexts. The framework is designed to be adaptable and scalable for multiple industries and organizational structures.
