15 March 2026 – Mumbai, India – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library (PMWL) related to sustainability and project management. The new resource is titled “Sustainability in Project Management: A Comprehensive Review,” an open-access article by Omamode Henry Orieno, Ndubuisi Leonard Ndubuisi, Nsisong Louis Eyo-Udo, Valentine Ikenna Ilojianya, and Preye Winston Biu, published in the World Journal of Advanced Research and Reviews in 2024.
The article presents a comprehensive literature review examining how sustainability principles are being integrated into project management practices across different industries. The study highlights the increasing importance of aligning project objectives with environmental responsibility, social equity, and economic viability, emphasizing the growing role of project management in supporting sustainable development goals.
The authors identify three core dimensions of sustainability in project management: environmental, social, and economic. The review explains how project managers are expected to incorporate these dimensions throughout the project lifecycle, from initiation to closure, using tools such as life-cycle assessment, stakeholder engagement frameworks, and sustainability performance metrics. The study also discusses the evolving expectations placed on project managers to balance traditional project constraints with long-term sustainability outcomes.
The paper further examines challenges in implementing sustainable project management, including the lack of standardized guidelines, difficulty in measuring sustainability performance, resistance to change in traditional project practices, and the need for stronger governance frameworks. The authors conclude that sustainable project management is becoming a strategic necessity rather than an optional practice, and future research should focus on developing clearer frameworks, measurable indicators, and technology-enabled approaches to support sustainable project delivery.
