22 March 2026 – Mumbai, India – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library (PMWL) related to sustainability and ESG in project management. The new resource is titled “Sustainable Project Management: Integrating ESG Goals into the Project Lifecycle,” an open-access article by Md Rahat Hossain and Azad Rahman, published in The Science Post in March 2025.
The article explores how Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles can be systematically embedded across all phases of the project lifecycle, from initiation to closure. It highlights the growing shift in project management from traditional success metrics such as cost, scope, and time to broader sustainability-driven outcomes that include environmental impact, social responsibility, and governance transparency.
The study proposes a structured framework integrating ESG considerations into each phase of the project lifecycle, supported by emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, Blockchain, and cloud-based tools. For example, AI and predictive analytics are used for sustainability forecasting and risk identification during planning, while blockchain enhances transparency and accountability in governance and reporting.
The findings show that ESG integration is strongest during the execution (80%) and planning (75%) phases, while weaker implementation is observed in initiation and closure phases, indicating gaps in full lifecycle integration. As highlighted in the chart on page 4, ESG adoption is not yet uniformly embedded across all project stages. Additionally, the technology adoption chart on page 5 indicates that cloud tools (90%) and AI (85%) are the most widely used enablers of ESG-driven project management.
The paper also identifies key benefits such as improved stakeholder trust (88%), long-term value creation (85%), and cost efficiency (78%), while acknowledging challenges including high implementation costs, lack of tools, and stakeholder resistance. Overall, the study positions project managers as key change agents in driving sustainable transformation through ESG-aligned project practices.
