29 March 2026 – Mumbai, India – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library (PMWL) related to sustainability and project management. The new resource is titled “The Impact of Sustainability Considerations on Project Management Practices,” an open-access article by Sunil Kumar Suvvari and Dr. Rohini Sawalkar, published in the International Journal of Intelligent Systems and Applications in Engineering in 2024.
The article presents a comprehensive study examining how sustainability considerations influence project management practices across industries. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research incorporates both quantitative and qualitative data from 150 project managers to analyze the integration of environmental, social, and economic factors commonly referred to as the Triple Bottom Line into project lifecycles.
The findings reveal a significant shift toward sustainable project management, with 78% of respondents reporting increased emphasis on environmental considerations during project planning. The study highlights how sustainability is being embedded across all phases of the project lifecycle, including initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closure. It also identifies key enablers such as organizational culture, leadership commitment, stakeholder engagement, and the use of digital technologies in monitoring and reporting sustainability performance.
The research further discusses challenges in implementing sustainable project management, including resource constraints, lack of standardized metrics, and difficulties in measuring sustainability outcomes. The conceptual model on page 4 illustrates how environmental, social, and economic aspects are integrated into each phase of the project lifecycle, while the chart on page 12 highlights varying adoption rates of sustainability practices across industries, with energy and construction sectors leading in integration.
The study concludes that sustainability is no longer an optional consideration but a strategic imperative in project management. It emphasizes the need for a holistic, lifecycle-based approach, stronger stakeholder engagement, and continuous learning to effectively integrate sustainability into project practices.
