6 July 2019 – Mumbai, India – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library (PMWL) related to Aviation and Airline Industries. The new resource is titled “Flying Smarter - The Smart Airport and the Internet of Things an article from Deloitte Insights.

In the age of technological supremacy where businesses are competing to utilize revolutionary innovations and improve the strategies, Internet of Things (IOT) is one such technology which has the ability to bring the change in different industries. However, the authors here refer to IOT not just as a technology but rather a technology architecture, where the flow of information across different stages is important rather than the specific technologies involved.

Despite high awareness of IOT in the aviation ecosystem, the knowledge of harnessing and maximizing IOT’s capabilties are much limited. This article discusses IOT applications in the airline industry and states that IOT cannot only improve efficiency but also traveller experiences and generate new revenues. The article also provides real-time examples in illustrating each IOT application in the airport.

The article talks about how airports can provide a differentiated product or service using IOT. It then maps the IOT solutions to each stage as well as airport stakeholders to show the value IOT creates to the traveller and airport operations. Further, the article discusses top-down and bottom-up approachs to IOT selection in creating the smart airport and also about barriers to IOT implementation.
