Access to new resource related to lessons learned in infrastructure projects added to PMWL

25 November 2021 – São Paulo, Brazil – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library (PMWL) related to lessons learned from an infrastructure project. The new resource is titled “Lessons learned from the Dubai metro project”, by Khaled A. Hamdy. It was published as a conference paper at 2014 PMI® Global Congress in Phoenix, USA.
This article is a compilation of lessons learned from Dubai metropolitan railway construction. This megaproject, also known as “Dubai Metro”, comprised the construction of 75 km and 47 stations and was the largest driverless metro system in the world by the time of project completion 10 years ago. After a decade, the lessons learned from such project are still precious for the engineering community.
The author focuses on classifying the lessons in five categories: managerial, technical, administrative, contractual, and financial. As for the managerial acquired knowledge out of this project, there is a big emphasis on strong and motivated leadership as a crucial factor to successfully deliver a mega project. Regarding technical lessons, Hamdy points out the need of client to constantly site visit to ensure reports accuracy. In other words, in projects like these ones, client should not wait from the office, should find information from real-time observation.
To sum up, Hamdy gives us a hint that metro projects should be managed as a portfolio of programs, projects and related technical work rather than a single large complex project.
