Managing Disruptive Innovations in Healthcare

Posted on July 25, 2024

Resource provided by Ameena Haq

25 July 2024 – Rawalpindi, Pakistan – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library (PMWL) related to Innovations and Wicked Problems in Healthcare Project Management. The new resource titled “Implementing Disruptive Innovation: A Wicked Problem for Health Care Managers?” is a paper by Yvon Dufour & Peter Steane, and published in Management & Avenir - Santé in 2013.

This article discusses the complex nature of managing disruptive innovations in healthcare. The authors argue that these innovations represent "wicked problems" due to their inherent complexity and the need for emergent, trial-and-error learning. They highlight five basic elements of disruptive innovations that contribute to their complexity which are mentioned as influencers, behaviors, ideology, knowledge, and boundaries. These elements create uncertainties and fragmenting forces, making it difficult for healthcare managers to implement effective solutions. The paper enforces the need for a radical shift from traditional linear and sequential decision-making processes to more adaptive approaches that recognize the unique and unstable nature of wicked problems.

The authors advocate for adaptive management strategies that incorporate emergent learning and stakeholder engagement, highlighting the importance of understanding behavior changes and employing education and social marketing to effectively manage these disruptions. By exploring the intricacies of disruptive innovations and their impact on healthcare, the authors provide a conceptual framework for further research and practical strategies for healthcare managers to navigate these complex issues. The paper offers practical insights for healthcare managers, emphasizing the importance of stakeholder engagement, understanding behavior change, and the role of education and social marketing in addressing these challenges. Through this exploration, the paper provides a conceptual framework that aids in comprehending the nuances of disruptive innovations and developing more flexible and responsive management approaches.
