05 August 2022 – Almaty, Kazakhstan – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library (PMWL) related to Blockchain & Project Management. The new resource titled “Blockchain for Project and Construction Management; A Systematic and Scoping Literature Review” is an article by Samereh Jadidoleslami and Mojtaba Azizi published in the Journal of Information Technology Management earlier this year.

Since there is no central authority that governs blockchain, its decentralized nature can turn it into a suitable project management platform. Blockchain implementation removes project management bureaucracy and allows a single, immutable, controlled and encrypted source to be shared and extensible throughout the project life cycle. This study aims to identify the potential and platforms for the development of blockchain technology in project management and construction using systematic and literature reviews. In addition, it presents some proposals for the development and improvement of this technology.

The results of the review showed that in all areas of project management and construction there are applications related to blockchain technology, which confirm the gradual understanding of the value and positive impact of this technology in improving the efficiency of project management and construction. According to the results, the majority of blockchain research has been focused on “program and project management”, as well as two areas of human resources and behavioral areas, as well as project management research and scientific schools.

During the research, the authors used two different methods in combination to achieve results: scoping review (objective-based) and systematic literature review (SLR) (method-based). The main database for this research was Scopus, furthermore, the authors took a time limit (from 2008 onwards, when the blockchain concept was introduced first time). After collecting database, qualitative data analysis was held and it helped to authors to create summary table with all necessary information. In this table, the articles was divided by thematic classification.

The authors of this article expect that with the spread of technology, the alignment of project management and building science with new developments and technologies, the possibilities and applications of this science will also be improved.
