27 July 2019 – Mumbai, India – Access to a new resource has been added to the PM World Library (PMWL) related to Lessons Learned. The new resource is titled “Chernobyl – What Bad Management Can Cost Us” an inspirational article by Iryna Viter published on the pmcolumn website.
Many project failures costs billions of money and millions of jobs but for once in history, the world has seen a project failure that costed thousands of human lives leaving behind the remnants of the disaster. Chernobyl, the world’s worst Nuclear Accident on 26th April 1986, took more than 3 decades for clean up and still the area is uninhabitable. This accident is a perfect example to show how fear, authority, ignorance as well as momentous decisions, determination and resilience plays a role in a project.
This article says that the Chernobyl accident was not a natural disaster but a man-made one. It highlights the things that went wrong in the plant, senior management mistakes and lessons to be learned from the disaster. The author mentions HBO’s mini series Chernobyl which delves deeper into the reasons why the accident occurred and depicts the aftermath of the disaster. Also, after 30 years scientists conclude that flora and animals have more resilience to radiation and the effects may be less damaging to the natural world.
John Baldoni, Forbes contributor to Leadership strategy, states that mistakes happen all the time and management may fail but it is the employees of the organization who meet the challenge and correct them. However, after everything, what remains today and what lasts are the efforts and sacrifices of those people who fought to contain the nuclear nightmare. One important lesson that we can take is that solutions often lie within the talents and skills of the employees despite a new leadership.
