1 August 2017 – Almaty, Kazakhstan – A new resource has been added to the PM World Library (PMWL) related to project management organizational approaches. The new resource titled “Revisiting the matrix organization”, is a report by McKinsey, one of the world’s largest management consulting organizations.

Matrix organization: is it good or bad? In its quarterly report, McKinsey refers to a Gallup survey that showed advantages and disadvantages of matrix organizations.   Around 4 thousand employees of non-matrixed, slightly matrixed, matrixed and strongly matrixed organisations had participated in the survey.

It was defined during the study that the key benefit matrixed organizations provide is collaboration between co-workers. However, the key weakness is lack of clarity about responsibilities and communication at the level of line and project leaders. Another issue is that matrixed organization employees spend most of their time responding to co-workers requests and participating in meetings. This, according to McKinsey, slows down decision-making process and decreases productivity.
